Reports rife from Kirinyaga
county offices is that there is an out break of foot and mouth disease in the county.
The disease is believed to have broken out at Nyangati ward and spread to Kangai,
prompting the veterinary officers to impose quarantine in those places. The
governor has also directed restriction of movement of animals in the entire
county.
According to the governor Ksh 2
million has been set aside to roll out the exercise,which is expected to last
for the next 8 days. Procurement of vaccine from Kenya Veterinary Production Institute has already started with vaccination set to start today in Mwea east
district.
Already veterinary officers in
the county have warned farmers against defying the quarantine notice, saying
that any noncompliance will lead to facing the full force of law.
Farmers whose animals die out of
the infection are advised to either bury the carcasses not less than four feet
below the surface or burn them.
